Responding to reports in the Chinese press that McDonald’s is using tertiary butylhydroquinone in its fried chicken, the company’s Chinese unit insists the chemical meets food safety standards there.
Calling the chemical “harmless,” a spokesperson denied it poses health risks. American McNuggets also have tertiary butylhydroquinone, a petroleum-based product, and dimethylpolysiloxane, an anti-foaming agent used in cosmetics. The fast-food giant has 1,146 stores in China, and plans to reach 2,000 outlets by 2013.
